Thanksgiving is a time to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. At the heart of this holiday is one of life’s greatest gifts: family. Whether gathered around a crowded dinner table or connecting from afar, family reminds us of our roots, our values, and the love that shapes who we are.
Family: A Foundation of Gratitude
Family isn’t perfect, and it doesn’t have to be. It’s the relationships, shared memories, and even challenges that teach us patience, forgiveness, and unconditional love. This Thanksgiving, let’s focus on the importance of cherishing those connections, nurturing them, and finding joy in the time we spend together.
Some of my favorite memories growing up was Thanksgiving at my great-aunt Laurice’s. (We called her Duddie, which is a story in and of itself.) We’d eat turkey, potatoes, rolls, and chicken dressing, at least that’s what I ate, while we watched the Dallas Cowboys play football on television. Then came the chocolate meringue, apple, sweet potato, pumpkin, and pecan pies. After Dallas played, all the kids would go outside and play football. There was even two Thanksgivings that it snowed and we had a blast playing in the snow (which all melted well before Christmas).
At fifty-two, I still look back with fond memories of being with my family and smile, even as I write this, because of the love I feel for them, even though many of them are no longer with us, their spirit of love and gratitude linger in my heart.
The Bonds That Strengthen Us
Thanksgiving also reminds us that family isn’t just about those we’re related to by blood. It’s about the people who stand by us, lift us up, and make life meaningful. This holiday is the perfect opportunity to express gratitude to those who have impacted our lives.
This year, thanks to a dear friend, I was able to have all my children with me, and we were able to spend yesterday together at my ex-husband’s and his girlfriend’s apartment. We had a great time eating and playing games, and even got to meet her amazing son, who was a joy to be around. What a blessing it was to spend time together as a family. And today, Thanksgiving, three of my children and I spent half the day with some of my brothers and their families.
Simple things, being invited to spend time with family and friends, someone aiding you in getting your child to another state for the week, and just knowing that God has blessed me so much has made this a week I will always remember and cherish.
Creating New Traditions
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, consider ways to deepen your connection with family. Whether it’s starting a gratitude jar, preparing a favorite family recipe, or simply spending quality time together, these moments can become the foundation of cherished traditions.
A Heart of Gratitude
This Thanksgiving, let’s remember to be grateful not only for what we have but also for who we have. Family reminds us of our capacity to love, forgive, and grow. It’s through these bonds that we experience some of life’s most profound blessings.
What are you most grateful for this Thanksgiving? Share your gratitude with those who mean the most, and let this season be a reminder of the joy and strength found in family.
