“…let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.”
~ Joseph Smith (1805–1844)
(Doctrine and Covenants 123:17)
When life feels overwhelming, and the demands of the world weigh heavily on us, it’s easy to feel as though we must keep moving, doing, and fixing. Yet Joseph Smith’s timeless wisdom shows us that we’re not alone.
This powerful statement teaches a principle that is both challenging and liberating: balance faithful action with divine trust. It reminds us that while God expects us to act in faith and do what we can, there comes a point when we must pause, surrender, and allow His hand to work miracles in our lives.
“Cheerfully Do All Things in Our Power”
The first part of Joseph’s counsel emphasizes action. Life is not meant to be lived passively. Whether we are solving personal challenges, strengthening our families, or navigating trials, we are invited to move forward with energy and determination. Doing so cheerfully reflects our trust in God’s plan and our willingness to obey His commandments, even when the way forward is unclear.
This doesn’t mean we won’t feel weary or unsure—it means we choose to act despite our fears. It’s in those moments of deliberate effort that God’s grace empowers us to keep going.
“Stand Still, with the Utmost Assurance”
The second part of the quote reminds us that we are not alone in our efforts. After we have done our part, we must learn to “stand still.” This doesn’t mean we stop caring or stop praying. Rather, it is a spiritual posture of trust, where we allow God to take over. We lean into the assurance that He sees the bigger picture, and His timing is perfect.
Standing still in faith is especially difficult in a world that prizes immediate results. Yet this principle invites us to embrace the peace that comes when we stop trying to control every outcome. When we “stand still,” we create space for God to work in His way.
“See the Salvation of God”
Joseph’s words carry a promise: if we cheerfully do our part and then trust in the Lord, we will witness His salvation. This salvation may come in ways we don’t expect—a change of heart, a strengthened relationship, or even a miracle we never saw coming. God’s arm is mighty, and He is fully capable of delivering us in His time and way.
Applying This Truth Today
In our daily lives, this principle can help us face challenges with hope. Whether we’re seeking answers to prayers, healing from trials, or striving to reach a goal, the balance of action and trust allows us to rely on divine power. When we have done all we can—faithfully and cheerfully—we can rest in the assurance that God is in control.
As you move forward, consider how you might cheerfully engage in your responsibilities while learning to stand still and trust. What burdens can you lay at the Savior’s feet today? How can you look for His hand in your life, knowing that His salvation is sure?
In Joseph Smith’s words lies a timeless call: act with faith and trust with peace. God’s salvation is nearer than we often realize.
