As a writer, my days are often filled with extensive research into the intricate lives of my characters, the complexity of the world they inhabit, and the rollercoaster of emotions that define their existence. As I write, the characters become a part of me. While writing "Piece by Piece," book two in the Fight For Freedom Series (Coming in Spring 2025), a little girl, Angel, broke and healed a piece of my heart as I wrote her story. At four, Angel has already suffered traumas no person should have to experience. Those who know me, know I was sexually abused at a very young age. Though my story is not the same as Angels, I believe too many children share these types of traumas.
Though my literary pursuits are very important to me, one of the most profound challenges I am undertaking is aiding children in their journey towards recovery from significant traumas. In my role as a Romance author and a staunch advocate for trauma recovery, I've had the privilege of coming across numerous tales of remarkable resilience. This has fueled my unwavering dedication to imparting valuable techniques and profound insights aimed at guiding children on the path to rebuilding trust and discovering their personal routes to healing.
Understanding the Impact of Trauma
Trauma can leave deep emotional scars, particularly in children. Whether it's the aftermath of abuse, neglect, or witnessing a traumatic event, these experiences can shatter a child's sense of safety and trust. As we know, trust is the cornerstone of healthy relationships, and when it's blocked or broken, the path to recovery can seem daunting.
The Role of Love and Patience
In my work, I've found that love and patience are powerful tools for rebuilding trust. Children who have suffered major traumas often struggle to trust adults, fearing that they will be hurt again. It's crucial to show them unwavering love and consistency. As a Christian, I draw inspiration from the gospel of Jesus Christ, where love and compassion are at its core. This love can be a guiding light in the darkest of times.
Teaching Self-Compassion
Another essential aspect of helping these children is teaching them self-compassion. Many carry guilt and blame for the traumas they've endured. It's important to help them understand that they are not at fault and that it's okay to have complex emotions. In this journey, the scriptures, including the Bible and the Book of Mormon, can offer valuable teachings about forgiveness and self-worth.

When using essential oils for emotional and mental health, it's essential to dilute them properly with a carrier oil and perform a patch test to ensure no allergies or sensitivities exist. Aromatherapy can complement other trauma recovery techniques and contribute to a more holistic approach to healing. However, it's essential to seek guidance from a qualified aromatherapist or mental health professional for personalized recommendations and safe usage. My team and I are happy to assist you. Intentional Breathing
Intentional breathing is a simple yet transformative practice that can play a significant role in trauma recovery. When focusing on a particular issue that triggers pain or discomfort—even if the exact cause is unclear—intentional breathing allows for the release of negative emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. Start by identifying how you feel, whether it’s sadness, anger, or fear, and set an intention to let go of those emotions.
To begin, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your diaphragm, just below your ribcage. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, allowing your diaphragm (not your chest) to rise as you fill your lungs with air. Hold the breath for a moment, then exhale gently through your mouth, letting your body relax with the release. Repeat this process for several minutes, focusing on the sensation of your breath and the intention to let go of what no longer serves you. This practice not only calms the nervous system but also teaches mindfulness and self-regulation.
For younger children, making breathing exercises playful can be helpful. Encourage them to pretend they are blowing up a balloon or blowing out candles on a cake. These visualizations make the practice engaging and approachable.
Intentional breathing aligns with holistic healing by promoting a connection between the mind and body. It fosters an awareness of the present moment, allowing children and adults alike to feel grounded and safe. Incorporating this practice into daily routines can empower individuals to manage their emotions and build resilience.
Helping children recover from major traumas is a sacred endeavor. It requires a deep well of love, patience, and understanding, as well as drawing on the teachings of faith. As we strive to raise $100,000 for charities focused on trauma recovery, we invite you to join us on this journey of healing, where love, faith, holistic techniques, and essential oils can help mend the broken trust in these young hearts. One-half of the proceeds from the sales of "Piece by Piece" will go to non-profit organizations that support the trauma recovery of children, teens, and adults, along with people in need of help with Addiction Recovery.
Remember, with time and the right support, even the most deeply wounded trust can be rebuilt, leading children towards a future filled with hope and happiness.
