Yesterday, while talking with Del Gerard, he told me about a study done on people who were trying to get healthy and lose weight. The only people who consistently lost weight and kept it off and became healthy were those who kept gratitude journals that specifically offered thanks and gratitude for their bodies. All the body parts, systems, functions, etc.

I need to do this. I’ll start by offering gratitude for what I hope to happen.

  • I am grateful that my body works in tandem with Heavenly Father’s will for me.
  • I am grateful my body has the strength to help me accomplish all Heavenly Father asks of me.
  • I am grateful my body has the capacity to heal and works to be healthier.
  • I am grateful my body bends and moves with ease.
  • I am grateful for my mind’s ability to recall things I need.
  • I am grateful for the rhythms of my body.

And since my body seems to often believe it’s pregnant, I look forward to it functioning properly.

The Power of Gratitude for Our Bodies

As I reflect on this study, I can’t help but marvel at how much our thoughts shape our realities. Gratitude journals are not just a tool for spiritual growth but also a physical one. Even before this challenging year, research highlighted the profound connection between gratitude and well-being. Studies showed that practicing gratitude could lower stress, improve sleep, and boost physical health—benefits we’ve all needed more than ever in 2020, the year of COVID.

This year has reminded me how vital it is to appreciate what we have, even amid uncertainty. When we focus on what we love about our bodies—or even what we hope to love—we change the way we think about ourselves. That shift in perspective aligns us with positive action, healthier choices, and greater self-respect.

Gratitude doesn’t need to be grand or dramatic. It can start small, with simple acknowledgments of what our bodies do daily—breathe, move, feel. Even when our bodies don’t work as we’d like, gratitude for their effort can be transformative.

As I write this, I realize how much I need this practice—not as a quick fix, but as a path to peace and healing. Gratitude aligns me with my goals, my faith, and my divine purpose. I am committed to offering gratitude for my body, trusting it will bring me closer to the health and strength Heavenly Father desires for me.
