Confidence Is a Mindset—And It Starts with One Bold Question

For years, many of us have been told not to ask “What’s in it for me?”

We’ve been taught that real service is selfless, that true kindness comes without expecting anything in return, and that confidence means never needing validation or benefit.

But what if I told you that true confidence begins exactly with that question?

“What’s in it for me?” isn’t selfish—it’s strategic.

When you ask that question with honesty and alignment, you’re not being self-centered. You’re being self-aware.

  • You’re acknowledging that your time, your energy, your gifts…they matter.

  • You’re saying yes to self-respect—and no to burnout.

  • You’re recognizing that service is not about emptying yourself, but about giving from a place that’s full.

Here’s the truth: Confident people do ask, “What’s in it for me?”
Not because they’re trying to take—but because they’re trying to build.

Build lives that matter.
Build relationships with meaning.
Build confidence—not just in themselves, but in others.

Maybe “what’s in it for me” is as simple as:

  • I’m teaching this to create more confident people around me.

  • I’m showing up today because it lights me up to know one person might see themselves differently.

  • I’m saying no to that request so I can say yes to what matters most.

Confidence doesn’t mean saying yes to everything.
It means knowing what’s worth your yes in the first place.

So next time that question pops into your mind, don’t silence it.
Listen to it. Learn from it. And answer it with intention.

Because when you know what’s in it for you, you show up stronger—for yourself and for everyone else.
