Compassion in Action: Drawing Closer to God by Helping Others

Compassion is one of humanity’s greatest virtues, enabling us to connect deeply with others and provide hope during difficult times. George Albert Smith, a leader known for his profound empathy, taught:

“The nearer we get to our Heavenly Father, the more we are disposed to look with compassion upon perishing souls.”

His insight reflects a universal truth: as we grow spiritually, our ability to see and respond to the needs of others increases.

Compassion is more than feeling sympathy for someone; it is the willingness to act on that feeling. It compels us to reach out to those who are struggling—whether they are dealing with loss, loneliness, or hardship—and offer support and understanding. Studies have shown that acts of compassion not only uplift others but also bring peace and fulfillment to those who give.

When we pause to truly see others—to recognize their worth and struggles—we begin to develop a deeper sense of empathy. This ability to care for others stems from a connection to something greater than ourselves, whether we view it as divine influence or a heightened sense of shared humanity.

Developing compassion requires intentional effort. It starts with seeking to understand others without judgment. Take time to listen, to observe, and to reflect on the challenges others may face. Kindness often begins in the smallest of gestures—a smile, a helping hand, or words of encouragement.

Self-reflection is also key. Consider what holds you back from acting compassionately. Is it fear, busyness, or a lack of awareness? By addressing these barriers, we open ourselves to opportunities to serve and uplift.

Compassionate living transforms both the giver and the receiver. When we engage in service—whether volunteering, offering emotional support, or simply being present for someone—we fulfill a deeper purpose. This aligns with the biblical teaching, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

Service doesn’t have to be grand. And sometimes, all we're doing is helping others by holding things steady, like the woman in the picture. Or, like the last man, being ready to catch someone if they slip or fall. Small acts of kindness often have the most significant impact. Checking in on a neighbor, mentoring a colleague, or supporting a friend through a tough time can brighten their world and remind them of their worth.

In a world where division and isolation are increasingly common, compassion can bridge gaps and foster unity. Seeing others through a lens of kindness and understanding helps break down stereotypes and build stronger communities. When we focus on what unites us rather than what divides us, we create a more hopeful and connected world.

The closer we draw to the values of love, kindness, and humility, the more naturally compassion flows from us to others. By choosing to act with empathy and understanding, we become instruments of hope and healing in a world that needs it. Reflect today on how you can show greater compassion in your life. Whether it’s through small acts or larger commitments, every effort counts in making the world a better place.
