Finding Yourself in Fiction: What Character Are You Most Like?

character development reflection Jan 22, 2025

Have you ever been asked which character from a book, movie, or TV show you’re most like? On the surface, it’s a fun question—great for breaking the ice at a party or sparking a deep conversation. But this question often uncovers more than we expect. It reveals how we see ourselves, the traits we value, and the challenges we relate to most.

My Answer: Shallan Davar from The Stormlight Archive

When I reflected on this question, I thought of Shallan Davar from Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive. Shallan begins her story with a low opinion of herself and her abilities. She’s deeply insecure, struggling to reconcile her past with her potential. Her journey is about growth, learning, and understanding that she’s more than her fears and mistakes.

What strikes me most about Shallan is how her transformation isn’t immediate or perfect. She tries to hide behind humor and wit, sometimes letting others’ opinions shape her identity. But as she faces challenges and grows into her powers, she learns the value of accepting herself—flaws and all. Eventually, she recognizes her worth and becomes radiant in her own right.

Like Shallan, I’ve found that growth is a long, hard journey. It’s filled with lessons learned the hard way. But along the path, I’ve learned to embrace my potential, be kind and courageous, and trust myself to step forward—no matter how daunting the distance ahead may seem.

A Question That Goes Deeper

When we answer questions like this, we’re not just sharing our favorite stories or characters; we’re revealing a piece of ourselves. Who we relate to says so much about our struggles, aspirations, and values. It’s no wonder we’re drawn to characters with traits or experiences that feel familiar or inspiring.

But what’s truly fascinating is how others might answer this question for us. They might see strengths we overlook or choose a character whose story shines a light on traits we didn’t think were visible. These conversations are rich with insight, showing us how others perceive the “main character” of our lives.

Where I Found This Question

I discovered this question during an interview on the Diary of a CEO YouTube channel, where Steven Bartlett spoke with Vanessa Van Edwards. If you’ve never watched Diary of a CEO, I highly recommend it. Steven has a knack for asking questions that dig into human behavior and connection, and this episode was no exception. Vanessa’s take on the power of questions like this one reminded me how meaningful simple conversations can be.

Seeing Ourselves in Stories

Our favorite characters remind us of who we are and who we want to be. They serve as mirrors, reflecting our vulnerabilities and aspirations. Whether we connect with their courage, humor, resilience, or struggles, these connections teach us more about ourselves—and each other.

So, I’ll ask you the same question: What book, movie, or TV character is most like you, and why? Think about it. Your answer might surprise you, or it might affirm what you already know about yourself. Either way, it’s a question worth exploring.

And we would love to hear from you. Who did you choose and why? Leave your answers in the comments!
